Total Permanent Disability (TPD)

A lump sum if you can't work again.

Total Permanent Disability (TPD)

What it is

TPD insurance pays a tax-free lump sum if an illness or injury leaves you permanently unable to work. It's there for the situations no one likes to think about, where returning to your job just isn't possible.

Why it matters

It sits nicely alongside Life, Trauma and Income Protection. Where income protection tops up your monthly income, TPD gives you a one-off sum to clear the mortgage, adjust the house, or fund long-term care. It fills a gap the others don't quite reach.

Who it's for

The main earner in a household
People in physically demanding jobs
Anyone with a mortgage or dependants
People who want a long-term safety net

Common misconceptions

"ACC will sort me out."

The reality: ACC mainly covers accidents. TPD also covers illness, and pays a lump sum rather than a top-up.

"It's the same as income protection."

The reality: Income protection pays monthly while you recover. TPD pays once, when you can't work again at all.

"I'll never need it."

The reality: None of us plan to, but a permanent disability changes everything. This is the cover that steadies things financially.
