What it is

KiwiSaver is New Zealand's voluntary savings scheme built to help you save for retirement, and for your first home. Your contributions, your employer's, and the government's all go into a fund you choose, and it grows over time.

Why it matters

Most people set up KiwiSaver once and never look at it again. That's the problem. The fund type you're in, your contribution rate, and whether you're getting the full government top-up all make a big difference over the years. A regular review can be worth thousands.

Who it's for

Anyone with a KiwiSaver account
People unsure which fund they're in
First-home buyers planning a withdrawal
Anyone thinking ahead to retirement

Common misconceptions

"All KiwiSaver funds are much the same."

The reality: Fund types range from conservative to growth, and the right one depends on your age and goals. The difference adds up over time.

"My contribution rate doesn't matter much."

The reality: Even a small change to your rate, and making sure you get the full employer and government contributions, can shift your balance significantly.

"I can't touch it until I retire."

The reality: You can usually withdraw for your first home once you meet the criteria, which helps a lot of Kiwis onto the property ladder.
